Wikipedia have much to do with the origin of the CyNet project. When back at the late 70s we were talking about Info-Nebula, one of the final products that we profiled was something very much like the Wikipedia concept. And when I first heard about it I instantly turned to a Wikipedia enthousiast. Then I sit back and gave it a second thought and took the time to observe. And came to the conclusion that while the concept is great the implementation isn’t optimal.

I read my first encyclopedia when 10 yo. The entire 12 volumes of Δομή, on a single go, only taking time to sleep; that was a whole summer project, and my parents where upset whit that. Then I asked for something different and some months later I received as a birthday gift the Grolier. And tried as much as I could to read it, not understanding english yet o_O. I still have with me the two volumes dictionary that helped me go through the most interesting entries. I learned a lot about how to use encyclopedias during this period.

First of all one have to admit that without enough experience in a particular field he can’t have a critical reading of any serious text concerning it. It isn’t quite a rule to avoid believing what is printed, it’s a consequence of a raw constat: many prints are not accurate, some others not even true. And in most domains it’s common to find controversies among experts.

But somehow, a choice of sources of information must be made. Not a single one, but as many as possible. And how many is depending on the interest one have for a particular subject. I was lucky enough to have several encyclopedias at home, a pile of dictionaries, full access to two libraries and special interest about what I was thinking about as a single subject; but never enough time to read every thing available. I rapidly learned to spot out what was consensual and concentrate in differences, because that was the most interesting part, different points of view, the space where things may happen.

Wikipedia could represent that consensual part and I understood it as such, with plenty of editors gradually sculpting the entries. And that could be the case if there weren’t people joking and/or trying to prove that their point of view is the one to keep, people who aren’t interest on Wikipedia but on an easily accessible public space to use for some other purpose then building an encyclopedia. I experimented several times altering an entry and follow-up the modifications other people introduced, ’till my contribution being completely wiped out. Most of cases resulted to something different in essence! The entry wasn’t completed, but rather replaced.

From this point I started considering what was the validity of my links directing to my entries not only to Wikipedia, but to any Wiki out there. Let’s say I give the definition of what a gene is, link to it within one of my posts and come back later to see that some creationist have change it. You may find me egocentric by I hate that. As the owner of a WikiPage, I’m able to set a list of trustful editors, allowed to contribute to the Wiki. Trusted ones, that will avoid changes just for fun. But what’s the point then? If I’m the owner I know those people and I can go through what they publish anyway. And if I think that the subject is of interest for a larger audience I can just make a list of links pointing to those documents and post it on one of my blogs. If I want trusted sources that’s the best solution.

On the other hand, Wikipedia isn’t about trusted editors, but about a lot of editors, some of them anonymous and a few even untraceable. And sadly, the result isn’t always consensus, but rather the last point of view posted. Certainly, you can start consulting the history of the entry and make your own opinion; but that’s time consuming and you may want to use the same amount of time to go through different sources, clearly identified. Thus the Wikipedia may be a starting point not to learn anything but to dig for outgoing links proposed by it’s editors representing those different points of view that are so valuable to start building the consensual and spotting differences. That’s how I use it. Entries that don’t provide outgoing links I don’t even make an effort to read them! Except for fun. Something a little bit more complex then a search engine, a place where people deposited links concerning a particular subject.

A good search engine could do the same job. I don’t mean Google or Yahoo! or anything of the sort; none is good enough for it for the moment. They lack what I expected to be a major input from the Web: peoples votes for documents accuracy!

Zephora’s laughing at the idea that Google’s entries couldn’t be influenced by users triggered this post.

Wikipedia is better than most of the web because YOU CAN CHANGE IT. And if you inform them that someone is acting in a malicious way, Wikipedians will actually track it to keep it neutral. Can you even imagine Google doing that for every webpage out there? Ha ha ha ha ha. Try getting an article that is libelous removed from the Google index, like a mean-spirited blog entry. Not going to happen (unless you’re Scientology).

If a user can inform Wikipedians, why he couldn’t inform Google? No, not Google in fact, but Google users, by providing tags/score for any page he is visiting. It is not about an engine to become trustfull, engines are build to provide analysis from content. They aren’t intelligent enough to be trusted. But people are. So, why not use people the same way as Wikipedia do, but coupled with the results from a search engine. And this is far from being Scientology. Just a little bit of technology to add to what already exist.

Imagine that while you are seeking information about something particular, you visit a page perfectly accurate and you can give it a 10/10 notation; then visit a page that have nothing to do about it and you go for a 0/10. If those feedbacks are attached to the pages progressively there will be a consensual notation of the pages content concerning a particular subject, isn’t it. And this will be nice to dispose of when you are hovering over a link proposed by the Search Engine: (8.5/10)±0.6 – 42, giving the average and standard deviation of the votes and their number.

Now, Google couldn’t just change it’s way to go, but they could add this to what already exist.

First of all, the searches concerned about should be those that may have an entry in an encyclopedia. Say I’m posting something about species evolution, discussing the matter or Darwin versus IDers. Tagging it enc:darwin, enc:ID, enc:evolution, either creating my tags or choosing from a dictionary of existing ones; so the Search Engine know that this is an encyclopedia entry [enc:xxxxxx] and index it as such. Then when a user use the Search Engine to get info about ‘darwin ID evolution’ the results include links to a enc page, the very same way that Google provide links to definitions of keyword actually. And the results page offers links only to those pages that are enc tagged. And for each of them clearly visible the score provided by visitors, as this is a enc dedicated page.

What would it take for?

A enc:tag dictionary to start with, presenting at least the actual entries of Wikipedia.

A feedback collector to get the scoring from users, with a small module counting entries, calculating mean and standard deviation and attaching the result to the page’s entry in the database.

Maybe a cookie to be left on each user computer, so if he change his mind and want to reconsider the score of a particular page the previous score the necessary adjustments may be done.

Each contributor is posting on his own blog dedicated to the Encyclopedia. That could be even be blogs hosted by someone as much concerned about a Webpedia as Wikipedia’s founders. Tagging the posts adequately. Building the entry from scratch or editing a previous one and trackbacking to it to create an history. Or discussing a previous post and trackbacking it for history. Then the Search Engine indexes those pages making them available widely, for people to read them and score them, then harvest and present the scores to the next users. Allowing to reconsider the scoring as the user becomes more accustomed more experienced to the subject. Let me be foolish and imagine that personal preferences, I mean scores stored in cookies, may be used to present the results of the engine in a different order the one provided by general scoring; that’s very Web 2.0 isn’t it?

And that the user can also consider that a particular source of informations isn’t reliable and he don’t want it to appear in the search result he is getting from a particular search; that shouldn’t be much difficult the set it up as the source have it’s own blog characterized by a URL. See, no Scientology up to now, and that could result to a removal of a malicious (according to the user) page. I hope that will happen, as soon as possible

What we will get?

The equivalent of a Webpedia, not necessarily hosted by one organization. Making competition easy enough, for the associations to need to be the best to get audience.

An average scoring for each entry’s variation, evolving over time.

The ability to concentrate to some information sources and wipeout those we consider as not trustful or interesting.

An easily traceable history of the evolution of an entry, using the trackbacks and links.

The possibility to discuss each version, directly with the author.

The ability to include every Web page to an entry by tagging it through a del.icio.us like service, that mean the possibility for any user to create it’s own collection of related pages.

The extension of the scoring attitude to every Web page.

It isn’t about boycotting Wikipedia, but change it to make it better, using new possibilities (blogging wasn’t as trivial as today when Wikipedia started). Adding value by adding links to scored sources to come along with what already exist.

Any thoughts about it Zephora ? Or anybody else out there. I would be delighted to hear from Search Engines people or Wikipedian, those that could implement that.
Technorati tags: wikipedia, apophenia, zephora, comment.

Cycells need to communicate to be functional. Thus they have to declare their existence. The easiest way to do it avoiding the creation of a central spot is by creating a blog where birth certificates will be published.

The publication of the birth certificate is one of the tasks of the CyCell Builder. Once a CyCell’s construction is finished a short description is made and posted, the CyCell’s Birth Certificate [CBC].

We have here the main reason to create a blog through which the Dome communicate with other components of the CyNet; either directly, (i) via the blog itself, or indirectly via (ii) the XML feed and (iii) the tags present in each post.

The post will be indexed by search engines and thus made reachable via keyword-using-requests; thus the tags describing the CyCell’s content must be visible.

The publication of a XML feed is quite convenient for people wishing to follow the activity a a particular Dome using their feeds reader; the inclusion of the full post, rather then an excerpt is preferable.

The inclusion in the post of tag-links as those used by del.icio.us, Flickr or Technorati, will facilitate the discoveryy of the CyCell by people using them and also facilitate contacts between CyCells as they can be used as starting point for the evaluation of affinities; tag-links could be the major primary contact source.

The Dome’s blog may also be used to publish the evolution of other components of the Dome; Rules, dictionaries etc. And it will participate at the building of the Dome’s identity on CyNet. For the moment I stick to one blog per Dome. The different avatars of a Dome’s owner may be managed as Categories in the same blog or lead to the creation of several blogs, one per avatar; in the later case, the posts of each avatars blog must be replicated to the Dome’s blog.
As I said previously, if one need to have several identities over the Nets he should use as many Domes as necessary.

Domes are the primary ecotopes where CyCells are built/born and reside.
Domes belong to physical entities: persons, groups, corporations and are named to represent them on CyNet.

The minimal setting for a Dome is:

at least one identity: constructed by a (nick)name and an encryption key

a CyCell Builder

a set of CyCells

a dictionary of CyTags

a dictionary of Rules

a weblog address

an e-mail address

a database with contacts/links

a crontab manager

This is what I’ll call from now on a mini-Dome. Several other sections may be added to improve it, and many will be presented here, but those are the minimal set necessary.

There is a close relation between the Dome’s identity/ies and the owner of the Dome. The simplest situation is when a single one is used. An this will be the avatar of the owner on CyNet; for example I could use OldCola, my nickname to identify my Dome. But this isn’t sufficient to provide a tight identification. It may be simply improved by the association of a public encryption’s key ; much more difficult to handle by identity thefts. So, each identity/avatar is a couple name/encryption key.
Now, why one would like to use several identities on CyNet? It’s much more easier to use your in-RL identity when you are seeking a new job; that doesn’t mean that whatever you are doing using your nickname will be hidden, as both avatars will be associated with the same Dome and the connexion will be public. If one need to have two different ID’s on CyNet the only solution is to host more then one Dome in his/hers computer. A Dome is strictly associated with it’s owner.

The CyCell Builder is a quite simple software, a text editor would do for those who don’t care to write some XML. But a more elaborated assistant based on a simple UI should be convenient for most of us.
Proposing a field where to insert the Seeds, a CyTags dictionary allowing the selection of existing CyTags and the insertion of new ones and a dictionary of Rules with the same functions as the one of the CyTags.
The most important function of the CyCell Builder is the generation of the CyCell’s ID number. Each Cycell harbored by a Dome have a unique ID number, which includes the Dome’s ID.

At least one CyCell is harbored by the Dome, the one defining the owner’s main avatar. This is the first one of the set of CyCells a Dome harbors. CyCells may be built in situ, or as we will discuss later born, and may be imported by cloning an existing CyCell [this is quite different from copying, as during the process the CyCell's ID number change]. A Dome’s CyCells collection is only limited by the space allowed to the Dome by it’s owner.

The CyTags dictionary contain all of the CyTags used by the Dome’s CyCells collection, and more. It may be posted at the Dome’s blog to facilitate exchanges between Domes. This is one of the services that may be centralized on CyNet, the publication and maintenance of a CyTags dictionary.

The Rules dictionary contain all of the Rules used by the Dome’s CyCells collection, and more. It may be posted at the Dome’s blog to facilitate exchanges between Domes. This is one of the services that may be centralized on CyNet, the publication and maintenance of a Rules dictionary.

The Dome is projected on Internet essentially using a blog. The Dome’s blog address is one of the components of the Dome’s identity.
The blog is used to publish the Dome’s dictionaries, and most important, the CyCells’ Birth Certificates (they will be discussed later). The blog will serve a feed facilitating the follow-up of it’s activity by anyone interested, CyCells, Domes or people.

The use of an e-mail address specific to the Dome rather then the owner was judged convenient as there may be a lot of traffic inter-CyCells. Web based e-mail services, even those scanning messages contents such as GMail, may be used without any concern as confidential information will be encrypted.

The Dome create and manage a database of contacts and links, summarizing those present in it’s CyCells, but may also manage it’s owners contacts as well. Apple’s Address software is a quite nice illustration of the software that could be used to manage this database. The data stored in a simple XML tagged text file may be easily used by the different components of the Dome, including the communication Rules.

A crontab and a crontab manager are what will make the Dome tic. There is an infinity of possible implementations for this component. For the moment I made all tests using Mac OS X crons and CronniX to manage them. Entries on the cron may be used to activate Rules.

CyCells are the basic elements of CyNet ; files representing a subject, an idea, a person etc.

A CyCell is composed of three compartments:

Seed

Metadata

Rules

And each one of them is/can be further compartmented to fit particular needs.

The Seed is composed of documents; one or more that can be physically present within the CyCell, that is copies of them included, or represented by a token: URL, request to be send by e-mail, description of the place one can find them etc.
My first approach was that there “should be” at least one document used as a seed; changed that to “could be” and the seedless CyCell was born. Seedless isn’t senseless as the seed isn’t the main part of a CyCell.

The Metadata compartment is subdivided in three parts:

Seed’s description

CyTags

Links: Relations/Contacts

Usualy the seed/file description metadata are usually within files, such as EXIFF data, but presenting them independently make their use much more flexible when it comes to define new fields.

The most interesting part of a CyCell are CyTags. In v 0.4 I describe them as:

Tags are expressions, simple words, list of synonyms, logical expressions, mathematical formulas etc. Even other CyCells may be used as tags. They are used to describe the idea represented by the CyCell and may be derived from the seed or be added during the CyCell’s built. They are used to evaluate affinities between two CyCells…

The main form of CyTags is the one del.icio.us is introducing as bundles, but a little bit more complex and structured. For testing I used a relatively simple list style construct; easy to XML tag. Using the example I presented for the blog bundle, there is what the equivalent CyTag looks like:

{CyTag:”blog“, alt:{“en”, {“blog”, “blogs”, “weblog”, “weblogs”}, {“fr”, {“weblogue”, “weblogues”}}}}
It can be easily transformed, for example to create a request for Technorati where all alternative terms may be used:

The last part of Metadata are Links: Relations/Contacts, and there are at least two categories: CyCells/Domes and Persons.

The driving force of CyCells is the maintenance and growth of this section of them. Links may direct to any kind of documents, other CyCells, Domes, or persons (via their avatars or in-RL).

The third compartment of a CyCell is the most original one, Rules. A set of instruction defining tasks for the CyCell, such as “Search for related CyCells”, “Initiate a Sex session” etc. Rules are expressed in CyLingo and as I’ll describe more extensively later, they correspond to scripts that may be written in any programming language available. And Rules may be expressed using any natural language, a set of alternatives describing each of them, the same way as for CyTags: {rule:”#42″, {“Search for related CyCells”, “Chercher des CyCells corrélés”}}; whatever the language used the Rule will execute the script #42.

Some basic Rules will be available, but any action that one would like to perform using CyCells may be expressed as a new Rule and distributed through the CyNet’s chanels.

{CyTag:”blog“, alt:{“en”, {“blog”, “blogs”, “weblog”, “weblogs”}, {“fr”, {“weblogue”, “weblogues”}}}}

Cynet is a proposal to build a system/network able to organize information and create links between documents, concepts, ideas and people.
It spreads across a part of Internet and a part of human/social space.

Actually, the schema proposed is minimalistic and doesn’t depend from a final view of the system1, the aim being to allow self-organisation and independent evolution based on a few simple principles and directed by selective pressures represented by the pertinence of intermediary results.

CyNet is biomimetic, the equivalent of a biosphere, populated by autonomous elements.

CyNet is distributed, and there is no need of a central service to support it; but dedicated servers could improve some of it’s functions2.
A distributed model is a warranty for persistence, independently of the fate of persons, associations or compagnies supporting it. To strengthen this, CyNet doesn’t require any particular operating system or programmatic language but may use any existing one or be adapted for those to come3.

1 • this isn’t totally true, I do have a small idea of what I’m expecting from CyNet, but there is enough room for surprises, and that’s what I’m expecting the more; this is not intelligent design of a system but design of an intelligent system.

2 • ITmimetics are widely spread and CyNet like services may appear in a more centralized mode, facilitating the control necessary to sustain business models. This is facilitated by the fact that CyNet is available under the less restrictive of the Creative Commons license. But there is a couple of hidden business models that could be used without competition to the central idea

3 • “persistence” is the main motto for CyNet

Despite the fact that I was preparing version 0.7 of CyNet’s description, I will put it away, at least for some time, and come back to publish version 0.5.1; that is rewriting and I think it is necessary to discuss some of the features I wanted to insert; I’m not quite sure that I always made the right choices

In a first time I will describe the constitutive elements and relations between them, then I will present the integration of the system and some of the strategies that could be used to set it up progressively.

Despite the fact that CyNet is perfectly clear in my mind, it is particularly difficult to write down a clear description of the vision and I hate fuzzy ones as they may be misinterpreted.
Sometime neologisms will be necessary; naming objects is easy, as a description is sufficient; naming concepts will be a little bit more difficult, as descriptions may be of the fuzzy kind.

CyNet’s design is at it’s at an early stage, describing how it “could be” rather then “should be”.I wonder if that will be possible to build it up keeping the “could be” attitude, thus providing the possibility for end users to create and use their own formats.

I spent a few hours to study the possibilities offered by Transilerature and the new document format Nelson proposed.
The questions was: is it usable for CyNet and if yes what adjustments would be necessary?

The answers are simple enough to present them in a single post: yes and nothing to change

In fact, Cycells were designed to be able to use any existing document format as seed, but I see that any new document format may be used as well, there aren’t any restrictions. It’s simple enough to add a document type in the list; in fact the first use of any new document type will automatically trigger the addiion, without any other action necessary.
